Journal Archives9/28/99 Political Ramblings Dammit, Dan Quayle dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination for president, and it appears more likely each day that Pat Buchanan will jump the GOP ship and land in the waiting arms of Ross Perot and the Reform Party. While I enjoy watching the Reps self-implode, I really wish they'd stick it out a bit longer. This way there would be more time for them to rip each other to shreds prior to the 2000 general election. Is this too much to ask? Must George W. get a free ride now through the primaries? <shakes head forlornly>.In a bit of good news, John McCain has officially announced his candidacy for president. I like McCain; he's never been afraid to go against his own party when his views on a given issue differ from the hard liners of the Right. Call me crazy, but I believe what he says when he speaks up as a result. He'll never get the nomination, but at least he's not rolling over for George W and his millions of dollars. More and more I'm leaning towards Bill Bradley on the Dem side. He seems to have a bit more personality than Gore, and of course he doesn't carry any Clinton baggage around with him. As much as I may selfishly like Gore to win the presidency as a vindication of Clinton, in the end I believe Bradley would have a better chance at governing effectively. He's centrist enough to get elected, yet still holds some of the liberal ideals that are important to me. Furthermore, he'd kill George W in a game of one-on-one, and isn't that all that really matters? |
