Wait Until Next Year
Cubs. It begins and ends with the Cubs. My life revolved around them
growing up. Skipping school each opening day, riding the el to Wrigley
to stand in line to purchase standing room only tickets. Thinking,
*really* believing, each and every year that "this was the year."
Watching them trade away player after player, and collapse like
clockwork every August under the summer heat; Sitting in the right
field bleachers heckling opposing players (and Bobby Mercer when he
was with us <spit>).
I took pictures of my 12 inch B&W TV when they clinched in '84.
Skipped an economics exam to watch the first playoff game in Wrigley
in almost 50 years. Rejoiced when they went to San Diego up 2-0 in a
best of five series, and actually cried when Leon Durham let a ball go
through his legs and into right field in game five, ending their run.
I was home with my one year old daughter the summer of '89, and
together we watched them win the division again, and then together
watched them snap like twigs against the Giants.
Ah, the Cubs. Someday. You'll see.... ;)
