His wounds had not been considered life threatening, but he passed away sometime around 9:00 AM . Exactly 135 years later, the Armistead Marker Preservation Committee (AMPC) dedicated a plaque on the Summer Kitchen in which the General died.
The Armistead Plaque with Committee Members, Reverend J. Marshall Neathery and Scott G. Walters
The George Spangler Farm is now owned by the Andrew Family and it was because of their friendship and generosity that we were able to place this plaque on the Summer Kitchen.
The AMPC received permission in November of 1997 from the Andrew Family to place and dedicate this Plaque to the memory of General Armistead.
The wording on the plaque is as follows:
Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead, CSA,
died here on July 5, 1863 of wounds
received in Pickett's Charge of July 3.
This summer kitchen was a part of the
U.S. Army's 11th Corps Field Hospital,
located here on the George Spangler farm.
This plaque is dedicated to
the memory of Gen. Armistead.

The ceremony for the plaque dedication was attended by committee members, family, friends and invited guests of the AMPC and the Andrew Family. In all, about 80 people turned out for the ceremony, including Honorary Committee Member Lewis B. Armistead and his wife Joan, Dr. John Latschar, Superintendent of the Gettysburg National Military Park and Honorary Committee Member, Ron Tunison. Dan Patterson, General Longstreet's great grandson, was also among the invited guests that morning.
Honorary Chairman, Wayne E. Motts, spoke briefly about the General's life, mainly focusing on his role in the Battle, his wounding and capture, and subsequent evacuation to the George Spangler Farm where the 11th Corps had set up its field hospital.
We were privileged to have that day, as participants Company B, 9th Virginia Infantry, "The Baltimore Artillery" to honor the General and those who died there. The unit provided an Honor Guard and fired a 21 gun salute. The original 9th Virginia was one of the regiments in Armistead's Brigade.
