Defensive Pistolcraft

"[Eric Ching's] insight in training was truly awesome...He is, by far, the best instructor I have met. His background is outstanding and he really knows how to shoot..and how to make the student shoot."
-- Andrew Langlois, Firearms instructor and owner, Front Sight...Press

Due to the sale of my teaching venue, National Shooting Club, to new management on September 29th, 2001, I have had to suspend my teaching activities indefinitely.

Feel free to e-mail me for informal advice and referrals to other trainers, and thank you for your interest in Defensive Pistolcraft Training.

The Defensive Pistolcraft (DP) training approach goes beyond gun handling and marksmanship. Our goal is to make your defensive firearm a discreet, safe, and comfortable part of your life as well. Because we provide only individual private instruction, we have complete flexibility to design a course of training that precisely matches your personal needs and circumstances.

The Instructor

The DP Training approach to defensive weaponscraft instruction was developed by Eric Ching , owner and instructor, and is based on Jeff Cooper's "Modern Technique." Mr. Ching was an adjunct faculty member of Jeff Cooper's American Pistol Institute (now called the Gunsite Training Center under new ownership) from 1991-1994, and was certified in pistol, rifle, shotgun, and carbine. He also holds Provost status, allowing him to teach Gunsite's methods as an independent instructor.

Mr. Ching is a member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET), the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), the International Wound Ballistics Association (IWBA), and the American Society of Criminology (ACS). He is also a life member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA), and the Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA).

Mr. Ching designed the Ching Sling, a three-point rifle sling that works equally well for carry and positive shooting support, and which is an integral part of Jeff Cooper's Scout Rifle concept. The Ching Sling is also standard equipment on the Steyr Scout Rifle.

In 2003, Mr. Ching introduced a new sling design, the Safari Ching Sling, the next step in the evolution of the modern speed sling. It is manufactured exclusively by Galco International, Inc.

Services Offered

Pre-Purchase Evaluation

Because you are the one who must live with your decisions regarding defensive weaponry, it is not our purpose to convince you to own a gun. Rather, our goal is to assist you in making the proper choice for you and your personal situation.

Thus, if you are just starting to think about buying a firearm, we can discuss with you the legal, moral, social, and personal ramifications of gun ownership. If you have already decided to buy a gun but haven't yet purchased it, we can help you select the weapon, ammunition, and accessories appropriate to your needs.

In-Home Training

For new gun owners, one option is to start your training at home, since that is where you will store your gun and most likely have to use it in self defense. We highly recommend that all family members capable of understanding the serious implications of having a gun in the home attend these sessions.

We can also conduct an appraisal of your home in terms of proper firearms storage; the tactical environment; defensive strategies; and perimeter hardening suitable to your lifestyle.

We recommend a discussion of "gun-proofing" for all of your family members, whether they intend to learn to shoot or not. Our approach is to demystify the gun through familiarization. Our goal is to make your family members safe and comfortable around guns, and confident in their ability to deal with them safely. By making them aware of proper safety measures, they will also be more alert and better prepared to deal with guns anywhere they may encounter them.

Other topics that can be covered in the home are: basic gun handling and marksmanship in preparation for range training; how to practice safely in the home; how to select a safe practice zone; cleaning and maintenance of your weapon; and selecting proper defensive ammunition. Perhaps the most important--and possibly disturbing-aspect of successful defensive pistolcraft, the combat mind-set, can also be covered in the comfort and familiar surroundings of your own home.

Range Training

All live-fire training will be conducted at realistic defensive shooting distances. Besides the basics of stance, grip, and marksmanship, you will learn all aspects of gun handling, such as how to load and unload your firearm quickly and safely, and how to clear malfunctions.

Once marksmanship has been learned to a degree adequate for defensive purposes, we will move on to defensive shooting techniques, emphasizing a balance between accuracy and speed with the most powerful caliber that you can control. We recommend that you try out a variety of full-power defensive ammunition before your training ends so that you can find the one that gives you the optimal balance of power and control with the gun you prefer or own.

Advanced Training

With regular practice, the training summarized above is adequate for competent self defense under normal conditions. For those who are interested and are willing to put in the extra time and effort to master them, we can provide instruction in more advanced techniques that may prove useful under more unusual circumstances.
