“I’ve been growing hops for nearly ten years,” said D’Luzansky.
“A lot of things can happen to a hop plant, and my hops and I have experienced most of them. Hops are perennials, though, so once you help them get established, they will reward your efforts with years of fresh, fragrant hop cones as well as the beauty and shade from their fast-growing vines. My goal in making this video was to educate the viewer so that one understands not just how to do the techniques but also why one does them a certain way. Many of the principles and techniques presented will help the gardener be successful with other plant species as well.
In an entertaining, show-and-tell manner, your video host reviews the basics of hop plant anatomy, growth habits, and life cycle.
With plenty of footage of real live hops, he presents hopyard layout alternatives, methods of site selection and trellising. D’Luzansky (“but you can call me Patrick”) presents thorough yet understandable explanations of soil composition, fertility, and pH requirements along with elements of plant nutrition, fertilizer varieties and their strategic uses. Patrick demonstrates methods of hop cultivation and propagation including underground forays into the root system and microscopic views of the essence-bearing lupulin glands. A brief history of hop growing in the U.S. rounds out the video along with a survey of hop ailments, their remedies and methods of picking, drying and storage.
To help the viewer get into a hoppy mood, Patrick wrote and
performed the “Oompah Music” theme song on a multi-instrument synthesizer. This 2-hour, VHS video is available at your local brewing supply or video dealer or by calling the Toll Free Hopline at 1-888-476-4677 (1-888-GRO-HOPS) for $19.95 plus $4.95 s&h.
