Paul's Picks

(Updated: July 22, 1997—at long last. Background by Cherish.)

See below to learn about the Paul's Pick Award!

Seasonal Sites
The Cousteau Society: Jacques Cousteau died on June 25th. He was a boyhood hero of mine. He was a great explorer, almost without peer in our times. He lived life very well. And he cared for the Earth.

Swimming: from The Mining Company. It is summer, after all, and this page contains links to various sites on the topic.

Weekly Fads—this week: watching and reading.
(I try to update these once a week. Previous ones can probably be found on my Coolness links page, but I suggest bookmarking the ones you like. I plan to add small graphics to denote award recipients, but that may take a bit.)

Another Coast: all things Russian, from literature to cooking to the poetry of arches and even wallpaper. There is a wealth of information here.

The Q Site: interesting, thoughtful links. (Not Star Trek's "Q".) The graphics are original and fun to check out, and you will be made to feel "at home". There's also some quick recipes for kosher dishes, but don't be deterred from trying them if you're not Jewish!
Paul's Pick Award
I try to update this site once a week, but that's often not possible, so all who submit sites will have to be patient. I may institute a math & science category in the future, but for now I will *only* list 2-3 seasonal sites and 2, no more, "Fads", which will be changed no more frequently than once per week. So I will not be able to list all submissions. I will try to inform you within a few days of entry of my decision, certainly within a week. (If I listed you previously, and I forget to send notice, just let me know and I'll give you an award.)

There are three levels of awards I will give. The highest is the Paul's Pick Award that I give to personal (or not too commercial) sites that I list on this page. Basicly, the criteria for this award is that your site must be uplifting. It must give something of beauty and/or some good information to the internet world just because you want to share it—a gift to the world. It might be fun, it might be serious, it might be sublime, it might be outrageous, but it must show some thought and originality, have at least a little real content (not just links) and, well, make me think that people are great. Slick graphics or great artistry are not necessary, just heart.

The second level of award is the Paul's Fad Award. (I still need to make up a graphic for this, but I will real soon.) This goes to sites which can be commercial or just good sets of links that I would recommend to a friend just because they're fun or interesting or informative. It helps if your site fits one of the specific topics that I file my links under, but I'm open to suggestions.

The third level of award is Paul's Linkage Award. (I also have to create a graphic for this.) I have my links divided into a set of topics. The idea is to provide a starting point for that topic with a fairly small number of quality links. These are reserved for pages that either have good information on the topic, or provide a lot of links themselves, but don't make it onto this because the subject is too dry or because, with only 2 Fads per week, it's just not quite "there". Take a look at my categories for Math & Science Links or Fun Links and see if your site fits before submitting.

I do object to sites that are too busy with animated graphics, music, etc. Used sparingly such items can be nice, but I have a 14.4 Kbs modem, and I've had really busy sites crash my copy of Netscape. (I resent being forced to upgrade constantly.) I am a sucker for nice graphics. I won't list erotic or porn sites—I don't object to the existence of such sites, but this site is for all ages.
