PipePro Powers Electric Dragster

Dennis "Kilowatt" Berube's fascination with auto racing began with tiny electric cars when he was seven. Forty-seven years later, his "Current Eliminator V" dragster runs completely on electricity. Find out how he uses a modified PipePro™ 304 engine-driven welding generator to power the car's batteries. Read on.

Work Truck Savings

For Lyle Proctor of DDJ Welding in Enumclaw, Wash., switching from large diesel to small gas engine drives meant huge savings—$8,000 when he outfitted his truck with a Trailblazer™ 275 DC welder/generator.

Stuck On Stick?

Whether you're a hobbyist or a professional welder, chances are you continue to get "stuck" on Stick welding. While the questions are common, they are not simple. These FAQs provide basic electrode knowledge, as well as good advice for choosing and using a variety of common electrodes. Read on.

Welding News From Welding Magazine:

Abrasives and Right Angle Grinders
A large number of new abrasives - and more powerful right angle grinders - have been introduced in the last several years that allow improved cutting, grinding and finishing, and anyone involved in the metalworking industries should know that choosing the correct tool and abrasive can reduce finishing time and costs. The right angle grinder is the most widely used tool in any metalworking shop. New developments in the grinder itself include more powerful variable-speed motors, improved ergonomics, and designs that dampen vibration.

Challenges of Robotic Aluminum MIG Welding
Welding aluminum with robotic MIG welding equipment presents many challenges. The aluminum MIG process is not as forgiving as steel and requires special control to achieve successful results, and a good understanding of the welding process and how to control it from the robot are critical. >From a robotic perspective, the welding process can be broken down into defined steps.

Metallization of Ceramics is Pushing the Boundaries of Engineering Materials
Technical ceramics are used in a wide range of electronics and engineering applications for their chemical and mechanical properties. Compared to metals, they are stronger in compression, especially at higher temperatures, have good thermal stability, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and good thermal and electrical resistance. They also are hard, and have excellent dimensional stability.

Robotic Bending of Heavy Metal Plates
BSC Bau-System-Center Entwicklungs- und Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH and Co. KG, based in Eisenhttenstadt, Germany, is the world's only industrial manufacturer of customized building structures made from specially bent, large-area steel box panels. The company currently employs about 20 people. It supplies readymade, precision-fit elements in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, currently available in lengths of up to six meters (19.68ft.).

Phase-Change Materials Provide Simple and Reliable Temperature Indications
Simple methods often are the best way to measure surface temperatures, and the use of temperature indicating products based on the absolute, predictable phase-change (solid to liquid) of a pure chemical compound presents one of the most straightforward and trouble-free methods to confirm that the desired - and correct - temperatures are reached in industrial applications.

Too Few Welders

I visit the AWS Web site, and there is a hot topic about "where have all the welders gone.” There are many factors as to why there is a shortage of experienced welders. It is important to know why the problem exists in order to fix it. Read on.

Chop Saw Stand

I just got my new chop saw today and I want to make a stand for it. I saw a really nice stand on here that had supports that slide into the sides. I tried searching but had no luck. Any help or ideas would be great. Read on.

Putting Nanomachines to Work

A research team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is characterizing functionalized mesoporous silica as a home for nano-machines. They have shown that an entrapping environment consisting of FMS actually enhances enzyme activity beyond the test-tube levels of free enzymes in solution. To see nano-machines at work, visit

Super-MIG to Debut in Chicago
Advancements in welding don't happen often, but when they do they can open avenues for new applications and permit better quality, greater efficiency and higher productivity. Welding Solutions Inc. is introducing its new technology, Super-MIG(tm), to the North American market. While Super-MIG(tm)was announced in January, the process had been in the development and validation mode since late 2004.
