My résumé and work samples

O.J., backpacking, and isolation

Forgive me for not posting a picture of my wonderful son, Nathaniel, who was born on the Fourth of July, 1996. He's so cute that my wife, Annette, doesn't want me to post pictures of him. She thinks someone will kidnap him if they see a photo of him on the web. So no pictures of Natty. Nor of Annette, who is so pretty that I'm afraid someone would kidnap her. I'm not cute enough to kidnap.

Speaking of aesthetics, I hope this site looks good on your browser. This site is an experiment in cascading style sheets, which it uses almost exclusively for style effects and colors. Trouble is, style sheets don't work as consistently as I would like them to. This site looks fine on Netscape 4 on my Mac at home, and I'm tweaking it to look good on the other platform and browser, too. The work samples on this site are graphics by necessity, but other than those, the only graphics on this site are the background yellow colorbar on the left, the photo below, and some single-pixel GIFs to make tables do what I want 'em to do. In other words, text is not trapped in GIFs unless there is a compelling reason.

Me sitting on a rock atop a snow-flecked ridge in the Cascades near Lake Chelan, Wash.I'm in the market for a new employer. I can help a newspaper or news-oriented web site prosper and profit. I have the smarts and the skills to do so much because I have done so much. I have been an excellent reporter, a stellar copy editor, and I put together The (Toledo) Blade's web site. The site went online last year and I am improving it every day. I do it all myself, updating the site five days a week, although I have some technical help. Read the details of exactly what I do and what I don't do on the site.

I have a fine job and my bosses are pleased with my performance. I'm job-hunting because I would make a greater impact if I worked at a place that embraces the web more fully. In the meantime, I am working enthusiastically. I enjoy my job immensely.

My mother grew up in Port Orchard, a little town near Seattle, and I want to move back West. I'm looking primarily in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Utah, Washington, and Oregon. Most of my relatives live in the Portland and Seattle areas.

There are a few goodies on this site. For example, a story about backpacking and O.J. Simpson, my brush with Jessica McClure, the little girl who fell in the well in Texas, and my résumé.

Please email me to inform me that you have surfed to this site.

A final thought: Try turning off underlining. Underlined links look ugly, and I want the web to look beautiful. Open your browser's preferences and unchecking the "underline links" box. Surf without underlined links for a week and see if you like that better.

Thanks for dropping by.
