The Indexing (Jeff's version)

Although 18 is performed as one piece with no breaks in the music, Reich intended it to have 12 distinct sections, seen in his subtitling of the work, Pulse-Section I-X-Pulse.  On the newly recorded version, available as part of the 10 CD box set, the piece is indexed into it's 14 sections (a section is added and one section, III, is divided into an A and B part) whereas on the ECM version there is only one continuous track.  As stated in The Liner Notes, most of the transitions between sections are signalled emphatically by a short melody sounded on the metallophone as well as a corresponding change in rhythm and instrumentation.  Here is my version of the 18 (ECM) indexing:

Section Time Section Time
Pulse 00:00 - 03:43 (04:00?) Section VI 26:00 - 31:22
Section I 03:43 (04:00?) - 08:03 Section VII 31:22 - 35:52
Section II 08:03 - 12:04 Section VIII 35:22 - 39:29
Section III 12:04 - 16:02 Section IX 39:29 - 42:47
Section IV 16:02 - 20:05 Section X 42:47 - 48:34
Section V 20:05 - 26:00 Pulse 48:34 - 56:28

Each section can be further divided into sub-sections (signalled by a more subtle metallophone melody) and so for Section VII (my personal favorite) the subdivision would be as follows:

Subdivsion Time Subdivsion Time
Subdivsion i 31:22 - 31:52 Subdivsion v 34:38 - 34:55
Subdivsion ii 31:52 - 32:22 Subdivsion vi 34:55 - 35:16
Subdivsion iii 32:22 - 32:53 Subdivsion vii 35:16 - 35:52
Subdivsion iv 32:53 - 34:38
