Bo's Brewery & Bistro

Pontiac, Michigan

 September 14, 1998

I have been to this place a few times and it never has disappointed me.   The beer is much better than most brewpubs in the area.   The pale ale, nut brown ale, and porter are all excellent, as are their seasonals such as the spiced pumpkin ale and mocha raspberry stout they had last year.   To my total delight, they have finally put an IPA on tap.   I LOVE IPA's and this one was great.   Not as bitter as most American IPA's but it was packed full of fresh hop flavor.   My only complaint about the beer is that their wheat tastes more like a pale ale than a wheat.   It only consists of 30% wheat malt and is missing the characteristics of a good Bavarian wheat. I understand that this is called an "American Wheat" but why even mention wheat in the name when it is styled like this?  The food and prices at Bo's are also very good.   I have had the smoked whitefish appetizer, portobello burger, wood fired veggie pizza, and the cheese nachos.   All where generous portions and tasted great.   The waitstaff has always been very attentive weather at a table or at the bar.   The atmosphere is pretty typical industrial trendy but at least they have outdoor seating and "the loft" which is an upstairs portion of the restaurant with live music and steel tipped darts.  Try to get there before six on weekends because parking in downtown Pontiac can be a hassle.

Bo’s is a nice building in an easily accessible area of downtown Pontiac.   We stopped in during happy hour, which meant we were able to get pints for only $2.   They have a nice outdoor patio and the interior was pleasant.   Our server was prompt and courteous and did a fair job of describing the beer selections.   My first selection was the nut brown which had a deep dark color and rich body.   One could almost consider it a light porter.   After looking the menu over, we decided on the smoked whitefish for an appetizer and I opted for the beer marinated beef fajitas.   The smoked whitefish was served with whipped cream cheese, crackers, onions, and tomato chunks.   I would definitely recommend this one if you like smoked fish.   The fajitas were also quite tasty, and surprisingly they were served with long grain rice, which was a nice choice of side dish.   During lunch, I ordered the wheat, only to find it was an American style rather than Bavarian.   It was served in a pint glass with a lemon garnish.   The color was a slightly hazy yellow/amber and obviously filtered.   The taste was basically that of a pale ale with a hint of wheat.   It was a good beer, but I wouldn’t label it as a wheat at all (even though it was brewed with 30% wheat.)   I would have called it a not-so-pale ale.   I would not think twice about recommending Bo’s to anyone looking for a good place to eat and drink beer in downtown Pontiac.
