Mackinaw Brewing Company

Traverse City, Michigan

November 2, 1998

This is a great place to come after a day on the water or in the woods around Traverse City.  The building itself is very old and has a great history that they incorporate into their menu theme.  Inside, the buildings old charm is kept alive by showing off one of the brick walls with what appears to be the original paint and many windows.  The theme here is diverse and is sort of a cross between an English pub/Great Lakes type of thing that I can only describe as nice.  The place has a really inviting relaxed feel that I enjoy.  The menu is great with nice appetizers and interesting dinner selections featuring house smoked meats.  We tried the smoked Whitefish bake and it was excellent.  As for beer, I feel that this place is above average.  The seasonal was an Irish Porter served from a nitrogen tap.  It was roasty and creamy with a nice dry almost wine like finish.  The Peninsula Pale Ale was very drinkable with a nice malty sweetness and good dose of floral hops.  The Pig Stout was also good and brewed as an Irish ale sharing a lot of similarities with our old friend Guinness.  As with the last time I was there, the waitstaff was very friendly and attentive.  All around, a fun time at the brewpub.  What more could I ask for on a sunny northern Michigan day?
