About Outside the Family Way My first independent recording (1998), is an intimate all acoustic collection of five Bradlyn originals and six covers of songs by some of my favorite singers and songwriters including Tim Buckley, Ferron, and Eric Andersen as well as songs by Bay Area favorites Ed Johnson and Carol McComb. The songs on this recording represent a fair sample of the sort of material I have sung over my years as a folk performer. On half of the songs I join forces with singer and guitarist Bob Reid, with whom I have performed as part of the duo "Bradlyn & Reid" for many years. These songs have been excerpted from the unreleased CD "Bradlyn & Reid - Now & Then". The unusual cover art was done by collage artist, Susan Stauber, who has been my friend since I first moved to Santa Cruz in 1977. Susan and I worked together at Bookshop Santa Cruz and at Logos for many years. She now lives and works in New York City. I wrote the title song, "Outside the Family Way", for people like myself who have chosen not to have children. This CD was recorded at two fine Santa Cruz area recording studios: Bear Creek Studios (engineer - William Coulter) and Pine Forest Studios (engineer - Dave Egan). About Lighthouse Keeper Released in November, 2000, this CD contains all original songs written over a span of more than 25 years. Like Outside the Family Way this is an acoustic album, but the arrangements include bass and percussion and added instrumental and vocal accompaniment by some of the finest of the Monterey Bay Area's creative musicians. Folk Goddess Mary McCaslin augmented the arrangements of two songs, including the title song, with her unmistakable voice and genius for vocal harmonies. Prize-winning fiddler and gifted improviser Dennis English delivered the goods big time with his intuitive understanding of my songs, while superb bassists Matt 'Papa' Bohn and Stan Poplin sculpted the bottom. Well-known Santa Cruz percussionist Rick Walker brought life and inspiration to the sessions with his wonderful collection of instruments and all-around buoyant and supportive personality. Other musicians who brought their unique contributions to the project were Kris Yenney, cello, Chuck McCabe, guitar and vocal, and my stepson Ilan Heer, nylon string guitar. The sessions were engineered by the dapper and gentlemanly Tim Prince at Ridgetop Sound, a great-sounding studio high in the hills above Aptos. (Tim also engineered Keith Greeninger's fine albums.) The CD was professionally mastered at The Plant in Sausalito. After the record was released, I sent the CD out to several hundred folk and indie radio discjockeys, and to my delight Lighthouse Keeper began receiving radio airplay almost immediately.
