IRELAND 2000

Monaghan
Clan Family Reunion
July 1st and 2nd in Bohola/County
Mayo
We are expecting from 15 to 25 relatives to gather
in Bohola in and around the weekend of July 1st and 2nd, 2000.
It will be something for all of us to meet for several days in the village
where the our Monaghans came from over a hundred years ago. I know
the relatives there are excited about this. Helen Byrne has been
very helpful in sending information. We are hoping she can get access
to a computer in the near future. We have now made contact with our relatives
in England (John Monaghan and family) and they will do their best to be
there also. We should have a pretty good idea by St Patricks Day
who is coming. Then we can organize the weekend as to meals, gatherings,
and events. Let me know if you have any thoughts on this.

Some people are hoping to take a tour of Ireland
& beyond and others will be renting cars and driving around the country.
This date of early July was picked for teachers and families with kids
in school. Early July is still the mid price season for rooms and car rentals
but air fares appear to go up in early June. The three airlines from
the states are Irish Airlines (Aer Lingus), Delta Airlines, and Continental
Airlines. There is only one Bed and Breakfast house in Bohola that I know
of and its called The Village Inn. You
should also be able to find B and B Houses in the towns in and around Bohola.
Larger hotels are found in Westport about 20 miles away.
You can start your plans by dialing 1
800 Shamrock to get some free excellent brochures from the Irish
Tourist Board.
Next start looking for a good travel guide.
There are ten or twenty guides out there to choose from. Three colorful
and informative guides are; Knopf Guide-Ireland (excellent on Irish
history) , Eyewitness Travel Guide-Ireland (good on the areas of
the country) , and Insights Guide to Ireland (an honest look at
Ireland and the Irish but this one may be out of print). We just watched
a good hour and a half travel video from the library called Discovering
Ireland. There are several of those too. Some good rental
movies to clue you in on irish ways are: The Field, The
Commitments, the Boxer, The Playboys, the Quiet Man,
Michael Collins, Ryan's Daughter, This is My Father,
and of course Waking Ned Devine. The newest release will be
Angela's Ashes coming to a your local theater soon!
Start thinking about your passport from the
Post Office which can take 90 days.
Here are some web sites to
get you started in planning YOUR trip. Just click on any one of them to
get lots of information. Enjoy!
